I never blamed my parents for what happened to me. In fact, they were victims just as much as I was. And now my dad was my hero. I loved him more than anything.
He was the one who found me when I was a skittish, street urchin. As I look back, the "come-as-you-are" attitude of my last foster family was a blessing in disguise. I had gone from the worst forms of daily abuse to utter indifference.
At the time, I thought indifference was worse. At least, when I had been abused, I had interaction with people. As twisted as that sounded now, I ran away from the one thing that, in all probability, would have helped me in the long run.
At my last foster home, I was snooping one day when I came across my case file on the office filing cabinet. I wasn't sure what drew me to it, but as soon as I got close, I saw my name, and when I opened it up, Edgewood was in the documents.
There was also information about where I had been before this home, which was all news to me because I had been so young I hadn't had a sense of location. I had been held captive by my previous foster family, something I wouldn't realize until much later. I just thought that was the way people lived.
I figured out that the abuse wasn't normal behavior, thanks in part to the few days I spent in school here and there. I noticed that other students didn't look like me, nor did they dress in tatters like I had. Heck, they even smelled better than me. I knew then that something was wrong, and so I made the decision that, when I had an opportunity to run away, I would.
In the cover of darkness one night, I left. I just kept walking and never turned back. I ended up finding a group of homeless kids and tagged along on their nomadic journey. They were able to keep us from getting caught by the police and taught me how to live on the streets.
However, my luck ran out eventually, and I was put back into care, which according to the address that was in the folder, I had managed to run away from backwater Arkansas to Oklahoma, to my indifferent foster family.
Once I finished looking through the folder, I was turning around to leave the office when I saw my new foster mom standing in the doorway. I immediately went on guard for the worst. Then I was shocked by what happened next.
"I assume you saw it—the name of the place where your birth parents could be. Do you want to look for them?" she asked matter-of-factly.
I remembered thinking about it for a moment. Thinking, Well, they gave me up, so why would they want me now?
"They didn't actually give you up, you know," she answered as if she could read my thoughts.
I looked at her, perplexed.
"I don't know the details," she continued, "but I do know you were taken, not given up. Do you still want to look for them?"
I sucked in a breath. Taken?
I nodded slowly in return.
She walked over to me, handed me a crumpled wad of cash, gave me directions to get to Edgewood, and then left me alone in the room.
I remembered looking down at the crinkled bills and thinking about how I didn't even know what to do with money. I had never had any before, yet I knew I had to get to the bus station to start the search for my parents.

When did you come to the realization that this was something you wanted to do?

2015 - It was always an idea that floated around in my head, and people always encouraged me to do it, but it was not until recently that I actually pursued it!

How long has you been doing narration/producing?

6 Months, I am quite new but progressing very quickly!

Is there any type of book you WON’T narrate? If so, why?

Only books that require accents I can’t do ;)

How many times does you normally read/record a chapter before you're satisfied?

Depending on the difficulty of the book sometimes the first chapters might be recorded more often to get attuned with the author and how they want it done, then it becomes easier!

Can you work with a cold?

Nooooooo…. generally not. Snotty, sneezy, coughy, or raspy voice makes it not worth the time to record.

How long did it take to make this audio book?

This audiobook ended up being about 3x the length of the total finished recorded hours!

How many audio books can you make in a month?

This greatly depends on length! Generally, full length 10 hour novels I can do about 2 per month with other projects and various other jobs included.

Do you prefer to read male or female characters?

I prefer male because I am male, but I’ve developed many female voices and do not mind at all!

Do you use this newfound fame to pick up ladies?

I do not need anymore help in picking them up ;) I’ve always been able to use the “I play guitar, bass, violin, and keyboard” card if I needed any help :p

Do you ever identify with the characters you narrate? If so, how?

I identify a LOT with many characters! Typically I find many of the naughty romances and main characters that have a music background constantly have me thinking “hmmmm…...that sounds familiar”

Does you have a significant other? If so, is she supportive of your narrating career?

I have a lovely girlfriend! We support each other in almost every decision the other makes, except what is for dinner sometimes….

Any favorite books you've narrated? What genre does you prefer to produce?

TOSK was incredibly fun and relatable for me, I love Todd’s character and his general adventure!! I suppose I prefer Sci-Fi, but my listeners prefer me to do romance, and I prefer to make them happy!

Do you find the authors difficult to work with?

Generally no, I don’t find many people difficult to work with as long as you possess the skills to communicate and put the effort in!

Any favorite authors you've worked with? If so, why?

Jennifer Theriot was fun, exciting and totally supportive while providing necessary direction to make the production great! Also, I love every author I work with!

Do you have a favorite project you've done and why?

It’s hard to pick a favorite! I generally choose to work on books that I enjoy, relate to, or challenge me. I have some projects coming up that are in the making, and are super character intense. I find the projects that require many different characters or challenge me to develop new voices are very fun!

Do you have a career other than narrating?

I do voice acting full time. I worked an office job since I was 18 until I was 25 doing IT work, customer service, customer relations, case management and various hardware troubleshooting. I’ve never knew what it felt like to do something you love for a job until now.

What are your hobbies and interests?

My whole life generally revolves around music. I am not fully happy If I don’t hear new good music often or If I don’t compose or play music often enough. I’ve played violin when i was younger for about 7 years then started playing guitar/bass, with keyboards here and there, drums occasionally, singing, and just using my computer to make techno/house beats for the last 10 years.

Excerpt

“Ugh! That’s it. I’m getting a boob job,” I groaned, fastening my strapless push-up bra and adjusting what little cleavage I had.

Cori walked into the bathroom and leaned over the basin to get close to the mirror. “On’t be ’upid,” she mumbled while meticulously applying her red lipstick.

“I’m not. I want tits. Big, round, perky tits.”

She turned toward me and eyed my beestings. “No, you don’t.”

“That’s easy for you to say. You have tits.”

“So do you!”

“Lies. All lies. Best friends are not supposed to lie to one another,” I huffed, lifting my arms and applying deodorant.

“Fine. You belong to the Itty Bitty Titty committee. Big deal. At least you don’t have an arse the size of a small swimming pool.” She twisted and assessed her butt.

“Pah-lease! You’ve got to be kidding. There’s nothing wrong with your arse.”

“Says you!” she mocked, pressing her lips together and blotting her lipstick. “Seriously though, listen to us. We females are never entirely happy with our appearance. Always nit-picking. Always finding faults. We’re our own worst enemies and biggest critics. And for what reason other than to highlight our flaws and feel inadequate? It’s just stupid.”

I stared down at my little breasticles with sorrow. They deserved love. It wasn’t their fault they were smaller than most. I really should treat them better. “You’re right,” I said, looking back up. “They’re underdogs, and everyone should love underdogs.”

She blotted her lips together once more. “They should.”

“In fact, I will parade my teeny puppies tonight. I will wear them with pride.”

She nodded. “Good girl.”

I hiked them in my cupped hands, feeling empowered. “I know! Let’s start a revolution.”

Cori laughed. “Let’s not. I know what your revolutions entail.”

Greatness. That’s what they entail. Pure fucking greatness.
